Potential Obstacles

Once you can determine which issues keep you from achieving your fitness goals, you can learn how to conquer them. Here are some of the biggest obstacles Providers have to overcome:

A Busy Life

Providers are often career-focused and work long hours. When they come home from work, Providers must also spend time with their friends and family. It’s common for Providers to feel like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to make fitness a priority.

“I never feel like there’s enough time in the day to do everything I want. Between work, working out, and spending time with friends and family, I have a lot going on. It’s hard to find time to do all of that.” – Linsey Alexander, 25% Provider

If you have a busy life, you might struggle to find the time to get into the gym or prepare healthy meals. If you can’t devote some time to yourself, you’ll have a hard time making progress with your fitness goals.

Putting Others First

Providers are often parents or general people-pleasers. They often put other people or obligations ahead of themselves. Providers often feel selfish and guilty when they spend an hour in the gym instead of spending that time with their friends or family. While being selfless is a great quality, it can keep you from making any progress and, ultimately, leave you feeling irritated and frustrated with your goals.

Financial Obligations

Because Providers are often parents or are interested in achieving and climbing the corporate ladder, they’re very conscious about money. Health and fitness require not only a time commitment, but may demand a financial commitment, too. Providers are sometimes unwilling to spend money on themselves or on what they think is frivolous or unnecessary.

Breaking Habits

Now that we’ve identified some of your potential pitfalls, here are some of the ways you can transform them into proactive behaviors.

Reframe “Hard Work”

If you’re career-driven and you take pride in being a hard worker, you may need to reframe your definition of hard work. People who work so long and so late that they don’t take care of themselves aren’t living a holistic, healthy lifestyle. Instead of putting in time, put in efficiency.

Come in, work hard, work efficiently, but designate time in the morning or at the end of the day for yourself. I promise that you’re going to feel good about taking that time for yourself and squeezing in that workout. Your boss and family eventually notice your improved mood and higher productivity, too.

Prioritize Yourself

I hear parents say, “My kids come first.” And, as a parent, I can appreciate that. My kids and my wife are my top priority. But, I also know that I have to take care of myself in order to take care of them.

“It’s hard to find time for myself. When I do get little bits of time, I struggle with the thought that I should be giving it to my baby or husband. I feel like I should put myself on the back burner and put them first.” – Allison Kim, 10% Provider

As a Provider, your schedule is packed, you work long hours, you take care of everyone else, and your stress-levels are high. And at the end of the day, you probably just feel like collapsing onto the couch. You may look at the gym as just one more obligation. But I promise that when you go to the gym, you’ll find that training is actually energizing. It’s also an opportunity for you to recharge your batteries and think about something other than work.

Make Fitness A Family Thing

If you feel guilty about taking time away from your children, try making fitness family-friendly. Take your kids to the park and run around with a soccer ball. Or, play with them on the monkey bars. Not only do you get exercise, you teach your kids a healthy lifestyle. Your active rest days are great opportunities to merge the extremes of your life.

Communicate

As a Provider and a parent, it’s important to communicate with your family. Explain to them what your goals are and why fitness is important to you. You may actually help your family jump on board and start a fitness plan with you.

“As a Provider and a parent, it’s important to communicate with your family, friends and co-workers. Explain to them what your goals are and why fitness is important to you.”

Do the same with your co-workers and your boss. If you have a new fitness goal, explain to them what it is and how it might impact your normal work schedule. The benefits discussed above should help you convince any skeptics.

Budget Reward Purchases

While you might be accustomed to spending money on your friends and family instead of yourself, I want you to designate a certain amount of money for yourself each month. Use this budget to buy some protein powder, running shoes, or reward yourself with something fun for sticking to your fitness plan.

The Next Step

Before jumping into the program, I encourage you to take some time to reflect. Watch some of the other fitness personality videos because we all have a little of each personality type. The more you know about yourself, your potential challenges, and how to use your personality traits to your advantage, the more successful you’ll be.

After you view the personality videos, watch the Clean Slate video . In it, you’ll learn the tools and tips to help you achieve your goals. From there, you can begin the Rewired program with your specific hurdles and action points in mind.
